We have begun studying Patriotism! We are learning about the history of our flag, the Statue of Liberty, the bald eagle, the Liberty Bell, the White House and some historic sites in Washington D.C. A highlight of this was making U.S. flags using a potato stamper in the shape of a star. The kids did a wonderful job patterning the 13 stars on the original flag. We made a patriotic overhang in our room, and that's the first thing the kids see in the morning when unpacking their backpacks. We will continue Patriotism through Thanksgiving.
MATH: We have been working a lot on number sentences, time to the half-hour, coin exchanges, What's My Rule Frames & Arrows and Number Grid Patterning... counting forward and backward. We have a test coming up around Nov. 13. I'll send home a review packet before then.
In the morning we go through a "Five Finger Check." Posted on our back board are five steps they remind themselves to go through to get ready for the day:
1. Did they unpack their backpacks and put homework/notes in the correct bins?
2. Did they move their lunch magnet?
3. Did they swap books in their Book Bin for Read to Self time after lunch?
4. Did they make sure their behavior card is on GREEN?
5. Are they sitting down working on the first activity?
Going through a 5 Finger Check really helps the kids with organization and responsibility. We have a different 5 Finger Check for the end-of-the-day responsibilities. I have my own 5 Finger Check I do before I leave my house, so I don't forget anything! I encourage everyone to try it! Here are Alex, Nicholas, Jack, Grace, Annabelle, Brooke and Klaudia demonstrating our 5 Finger morning checks:
Love the new family pic!
