This week is all about The Wizard of Oz! Today we became familiar with the story by watching the following You Tube video: The Wizard of Oz Read Along Story. We will focus on Character, Setting, Problem & Solution. We began making the setting for our interactive backgrounds, and tomorrow we will begin making the character puppets so we can retell the story to you! THERE WILL BE NO SPELLING THIS WEEK as we focus on activities for the Wizard of Oz.
Next week we will begin a two week unit called "Lighting the Holidays". The kids actually began research today in the LMC on this unit. Each student was paired with another, and their "research team" was assigned one of the five holidays we will be learning about: Diwali, Los Posadas, Kwanzaa, Hanukkah and Christmas. We will learn how these holidays use light as part of their celebration. Tomorrow your child will bring home a snowflake to decorate and complete with information about the holiday they celebrate this time of year.
HOMEWORK was sent home today about our next Writing unit: Narrative. Please help your child BRAINSTORM a family tradition you have. We will use this information to begin a "paragraph" story.
We are beginning a new unit in Math that will focus on measurement, telling time, story problems and fact power (the addition and subtraction concepts). We will continue to review coins FREQUENTLY. The unit 4 math test will be in January. In January we will also begin Number Scrolls and addition and subtraction timed tests. The unit 3 math test will come home this week.
I hope you all had a wonderful Thanksgiving vacation. I loved seeing the children again today!
