Math Timed Tests

Adriana and Lucas coaching each other with math facts.

Here's what's been happening in 1-3....

Reading:  I have been enjoying reading 1-1 with all of the children the last two weeks.  This is such a valuable experience for me, but I'm anxious to get back into regular reading groups next week!  Look for new books in blue book bags on Monday and Tuesday.

Writing:  The Mail Trucks have arrived!  We have begun a unit on Letter Writing.  Our focus this week has been on the friendly letter, but will be learning about other types of letters, like thank yous and emails.  We made Mail Trucks to collect the mail we have been writing to each other.  I hope you have heard the Letter Song being sung by your child.  It helps them remember the 5 parts to a letter:  heading, greeting, body, closing and signature.  If you haven't already, please return a stamped and addressed envelope to a person your child would like to write to.  We will be working on these letters in class, after setting a purpose for each of the letters, and we are hoping their person will write back!

Science:  We have been busy learning a lot about weather.  Mrs. Watanuki has helped some of our friends make weather instruments that we are using to collect weather data.  Next week we will begin researching extreme weather situations.  I have some fun things planned for this experience!

Social Studies:  Coming up..... JAPAN!  This is my favorite unit, and we will begin learning about this wonderful country in about 3 weeks, so more info will follow soon!

Math Timed Tests have begun!  We will be working on mastering our math addition and subtraction facts by "coaching" each other everyday and taking timed tests 2-3 times each week.  The kids progress at their own pace.  Here are more pictures of the children coaching each other.
