DREAM BOX MATH: Dreambox Math is a wonderful math learning opportunity for the children. It took us two days to get into the site and figure it all out... log-ins, adventure worlds, avatars, etc., but I think the kids all "get it" now. The kids each chose an Avatar and will be that character as they visit one of four adventure worlds: Pets, Pixies, Dinosaurs or Pirates. Each adventure world has basically the same math games that your child needs to progress through to get to the next level. They can choose to visit the pirate land one day and the pixie land the next; the program saves where your child is mathematically. so it doesn't matter what world they go to. It's like visiting Disney World with the different sections, but they all have fun games. Your child is bringing home all the information today. I encouraged the kids to go onto Dreambox 15-20 minutes 3-4 times each week. Regularity will help them remember concepts they are working through. They will be going onto Dreambox 1-2 times each week at school also. CLICK ON THE LINK TO THE RIGHT FOR EASY ACCESS TO DREAMBOX!
SPELLING: NEXT WEEK IS SIGHT WORD REVIEW WEEK. There will not be a pattern of focus. I will give a pretest on Monday, as usual, and will send home the list to practice throughout the week. Test will be on Friday morning, usual.
HALLOWEEN: Halloween party is next Friday, Oct. 30. The morning will be as usual with a bit of Halloween fun, and then the parade starts at 1:30 with the party immediately following. Please let me know if you have any questions!
SCIENCE/SOCIAL STUDIES: Next week we will be wrapping up plants. The following week, the week of Nov. 2, we will begin a Social Studies unit on Voting and American Symbols.
BLUE READING BOOK BAGS: A note about the books in your child's book bag, just to clarify.... when I meet with a reading group, I begin by asking the kids to turn in any books they are finished with. Rereading the books we have already completed is great practice for fluency, so the kids can choose when to turn in a finished book and when to hold onto it to keep practicing. When they have a story to read to you, there will be a little post-it note on the book with "Parent Signature" stamped on it. Sometimes it takes us two guided reading times to completely read a new story because we also work on sight words and word work during the group time, so when we finish the book is when I assign them to read it to you. So.... there is only ONE book at a time that is their homework. Let me know if you ever have any questions.
Thanks again for attending Open House!
