Daily 5

Nicholas and Jack demonstrating Read to Someone and using post-its
to mark an interesting fact they read about snakes!  Uugh!
This past week we learned the final parts of our Daily 5.  We have learned:

1.  Read to Self
2.  Read to Someone
3.  Work on Writing
4.  Word Work
5.  Listen to Reading

Our READ TO SELF time is everyday after lunch.  The kids started calling this Cozy Quiet Time because they are TIRED and just need a few minutes to settle back into the classroom.  They each have a book bin with self-selected and teacher-selected "just right" books for them.  They rotate books in and out ONLY first thing in the morning, so right after lunch they come in and immediately get started.  They have demonstrated this beautifully!

Our READ TO SOMEONE lessons this week involved learning how to use post-it notes to mark unknown words or something exciting/interesting they read.  I will discuss these post-its with them individually as I walk around and listen to them read.

During WORK ON WRITING this week we learned the difference between our Writing Time Lessons and Work on Writing.  Work on Writing is like kindergarten journaling and is done during Daily 5 time, which is right before lunch.  The children have a writing binder with blank journal pages and this is where they will store their journals.  The children were each given a yellow writing folder, which is where they will keep their guided writing lessons I teach them.  Lots of organization learning has happened!

WORD WORK gets into full swing this coming week, when we start spelling!  During Word Work, the children will work on ABC ORDER, WORD SORT, POETRY PAGE or a PACKET.  Each day, Monday thru Thursday, will be only one of these and Friday is a catch-up time.

LISTEN TO READING was a highlight this week.  I taught the children how to get onto the AHML Tumble Books site via iPads.  Tumble Books can be accessed online with a computer or mobile device.  Ask your child how to do this and hopefully they can show you!  We have a chart posted in the room to remind us of these steps.

This week we start spelling, Star Student of the Week, and Behavior Chart Treasure Box trade-in.  We are in full swing in 1-3!
Read to Self after lunch.  SUPER JOB BY ALL STUDENTS!
