Lunch Shift Change!

IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENT:  TOMORROW, Wednesday, January 29th will be our official lunch shift day.  First graders will go out for recess at 12:10 and then eat at 12:40 PM.  Please make sure your child has a fresh fruit or vegetable for morning snack to help them transition to this later lunch time.  We are looking forward to this change and the opportunity for all the students to experience the lunch period from a new perspective.

ALSO.... BOOK ORDERS DUE ONLINE by this FRIDAY, JAN., 31.  Great chance to build on your child's home library!  Last week and this week I will not be meeting regularly with reading groups because I am reading with all of the children individually.  I will send home new books in Book Bags, though, this week.

We have had a busy couple of weeks!  We learned a lot about Martin Luther King Jr.  The students did a very nice job organizing what they learned onto a "3-2-1" organizer.  On the 3-2-1, the students state 3 facts they learned from a text, 2 "ah-has"... things that really made them think or that they would want to share with someone, and 1 question they have that we could then research.  We have used this organizer several times, with Time for Kids, United Streaming nonfiction video clips, and with several nonfiction texts we have read.  We will continue to use this in our upcoming studies of magnets and the Olympics!
In LMC we heard the story "Snowflake Bentley" and then created snowflakes on iPads.  They, of course, LOVED this!  We have also been doing a lot of research in the LMC and learning to use the app "Explain Everything."  Our Family Traditions writing will be uploaded soon, and I will share those with you via email/Dropbox when they are complete.

One of the highlights this week actually was indoor recess.  We all are feeling a bit cooped up, so we turned our room into a dance studio!  This was, I think, the highlight of my week.  I'll post pictures later this week so you can see how well they were getting the jiggles out!  But here's a pic of Nicholas creating a remote creature with "Wacky Wigglers":

This week... NO spelling!  Because of the two snow days, we again we not have a new spelling list.  We will play the new detective spelling game for review.  The kids said this game was very fun!  Check out these pics of them playing it:

Don't forget the Valentine's Day Concert on Thursday, February 13!!!
