Book Reviews & Service Learning Project

This week we finished our individual Book Reviews!  The kids have done a wonderful job with these, as this is a difficult thing to learn!  We used the idea of the 6 colors of a rainbow to remember the order and parts that need to be included in a book review.  As I read aloud a story, I choose 6 students to come be my Rainbow Book Review Helpers.
Red = tells the Title and Author
Orange = tells a Summary
Yellow = States an Opinion about the Book
Green = Gives a Reason for the Opinion
Blue = Gives another Reason for the Opinion
Purple = gives a Rating
Yes… I know there are 7 colors of a rainbow… we chose just these 6.  The kids wrote a review for their favorite book.  These are proudly displayed in the hallway and will come home in a few weeks.

This writing project helped us decide on books to send to our new first grade friends in a Washington, IL school that was damaged by the tornado last November.  The school has 7 first grade classrooms.  ALL tables earned their $12 for various acts of good student behavior.  As each table earned $4 in change, they traded that in for a sticker for our goal chart.  This was a wonderful way to practice counting coins!  I was very impressed by ALL students for their efforts to raise this money.  We have selected the books from Scholastic, written individual letters to the first graders and ordered the books to be sent directly to the school, so we anxiously await news of their arrival!
