Earth Day!

Observing crickets
We are having so much fun with our new science unit!  Last week our crickets arrived.  We created a habitat for them and have been studying their bodies and behavior.  We "close read" the book Chirping Crickets by Melvin Berger to determine which type of cricket we have:  field cricket, ground cricket, tree cricket or house cricket.  We learned about each cricket's size, color and habitat.  Based on our research, we determined that our crickets are closest to the house cricket category.  The children did an excellent job with this research!  This week we will be studying our gold fish that arrived.  Sadly, 5 of the 7 died over the weekend…. yet another lesson in studying life.  We also will be studying EARTH DAY all week, as Earth Day is tomorrow.  I hope you all will be able to joint us this Wednesday night from 6:30-8:30 for the Book Fair and Earth Day Fair.  This event is always a highlight to the OMS students.  Wednesday morning our class will get the chance to visit the Book Fair, so be prepared for your child to ask for a book or two.  This is a great way to add to your home library.  We are HEAVY into our reading, so reading every night is VERY important for continued growth to occur.  Here is a wonderful picture of Logan sharing a Star Wars book he read.  We have been writing Book Reviews, and this book is definitely one Logan would give a two thumbs up for!

Two quick notes…. Our new Math Unit (8) is a lot on Time and Money.  It is a short unit, so we will have another test the week of May 5.  Also, I've sent an email about our Brookfield Zoo field trip, which will be on Thursday, May 22.  I need 6 volunteers, so please see the email for details.  Tune in later for FISH updates!
