Christopher Columbus & Tye Dying!

One of our favorite books this week.
Did you know that the longer a pumpkin stays on a vine, the darker in color it is?  "How Many Seeds in a Pumpkin?" was one of our favorite books this week.  We learned that a pumpkin's size does not determine how many seeds it will have.  A darker pumpkin with more lines on the outside will have more seeds than a lighter color pumpkin with less lines because it has been on the vine longer, even if it's small.  Nicholas praised Ally for being a "close reader" as she said she would like a pumpkin that was lighter with less lines because she didn't want a lot of seeds!  Dylan wanted one with MORE seeds, so he knows what to look for when he and his family go pumpkin shopping!  This story has a very sweet message, so I recommend checking it out.

In addition to learning about pumpkins, we learned a lot about Christopher Columbus and enjoyed making bottle ship projects.  Thanks to our moms who did a GREAT job helping us tye dye our shirts that we will wear for future field trips and special days.  This week, I'll let the pictures speak for themselves.  Don't forget to check out the first grade blog each week for the spelling list and curriculum information.
