Emotions in Poetry

What's happening in 1-3.... We finished all of our poetry writing!  The kids learned how to write a Bio Poem, a Cinquain Poem, a Color Sensory Poem, and a Freestyle Poem.  They each picked their favorite style of poetry and wrote one final poem which they included in their iPoetry Playlist.  They shared their poem "playlists" with each other and their 5th Grade Reading Buddies, and they are now displayed in the hallway.  They will come home in a couple of weeks for you to see!  We continue to READ a lot of poems and have been learning how a poet carefully selects his/her words to create a mood or emotion.  This is true for all authors having to carefully select words!  Each child was buddied up and the buddies chose a poem to read and find the words the poet used to get an emotion from us.  They did a great job with this!

In writing, we are beginning a Persuasive Writing unit.  Your child needs to bring in a favorite book from home that he/she will use as the culminating project for this style of writing.  Please refer to the letter that came home via backpack mail.  We will learn how it's important to consider the audience that will be reading a persuasive piece of writing, to state our opinion clearly, to have good supporting reasons and to have a strong ending.  We will focus on Persuasive Writing for the next 2-3 weeks.  Then we will begin working on our Animal Research Projects!  More info on that later.

In math, we began Unit 8 on money review, place value and mental math.  This is a heavier unit with lots of review!  We also began "Xtra Math" online for additional math facts practice.  Your child's information, user name and password was sent home via backpack mail.

Next week we begin Light and Sound in Science.... yeah!!
