This week in 1-3:

A great read aloud teaching ALLITERATION poetry! |
Reading: We have began reading a lot of poems. Last week we began
writing poems. We have learned about and written ALLITERATION, ACROSTIC, CONCRETE (also called SHAPE) and SENSORY poems. Next we will learn about and write a BIO POEM, CINQUAIN POEM and a FREE STYLE POEM. We will be compiling our written poems to be displayed in the hallway. The kids are really learning a lot about how poets use things like: their 5 senses, repeating words, rhyme, and onomatopoeia to help us visualize the story being told through poetry. April 29 is National Poem in Your Pocket Day. Today in LMC, Mrs. Brown helped each of us choose a poem that we will swap with five friends on that special day. We will be making copies of the poem your child selected, so all you need to do is get excited to see what five poems your child will come home with that day to share with you!
Math: This week we will finish our unit on Geometry (polygons, 2-D & 3-D shapes, symmetry). Our test is on Thursday. We will be reviewing Tuesday and Wednesday, and a review homework assignment will come home Wednesday night. Timed tests continue 2-3 times each week. Mental arithmetic, money review, fractions and problem solving are themes in our next unit, beginning next week.
Social Studies: We did a lot of mapping research last week on Pebblego.com. This week we will continue learning about reading maps, using map keys and using cardinal directions.
BOOK ORDERS: I will be placing a Scholastic Book Order THIS Friday, April 15, if you are interested. You can click on the Book Order Link to get to Scholastic.
